About Andrew Weston
Aristotle, that great philosopher and polymath from ancient times, considered achieving ‘eudaimonia,' which means 'living well' or 'flourishing,' as the highest human good.
As policy analyst for the military and avid student of history and classic philosophy (one who prefers long rucks in the wilderness over indoor reflections) I think Aristotelian ethics remain noble of purpose and conducive to powerful character building.
My mission
I have come to believe anyone can discover their inner hero in pursuit of ‘eudaimonia.’ This belief inspired a mission - to write and narrate ancient texts for modern readers & listeners - to help people connect to their rich historical heritage.
What Inspires Me to Write?
The ancients were superbly alive. We think of ancient history in terms of ruins and lifeless white statues without their brightly painted finishes. However, in ancient Rome ideas were exchanged in public spaces teeming with life. Philosophy was born in a vibrant cornucopia of streets and markets, where opinions and viewpoints were subject to passionate speeches.
When I was a boy I had a problem with articulation. One of my older brothers introduced me to the Stoics, and to Demosthenes, a statesman from ancient Athens who overcame a speech impediment to become one of the great orators from antiquity. This was a turning point for me.
Today, I try to bring the ancestors on whose shoulders we stand alive to modern eyes through modern translations and the telling of epic stories based on the great classical foundations of Western thought.
My Commitment to You
Friend, I promise to do my utmost to revitalize your interest in the classics and provide a visceral connection to your historic legacy along with tested philosophical principles for our chaotic era.
My Gratitude
Thank you for taking the time to consider reading, or listening to, my books and the great ancient works of our civilization. I sincerely hope it will inspire you, in good times, or bad, as you walk your own path through this moment in history.
Best wishes,
Andrew
